Key Capabilities

Data discovery and classification

Automatically discover and classify sensitive data across structured and unstructured repositories - databases, file servers, cloud storage, and SaaS applications - to understand what you have and where it lives before protecting it.

Transparent data encryption

Encrypt data at rest in files, databases, and cloud storage with minimal application changes - transparent encryption operates at the file system or volume level, requiring no modification to applications.

Centralized encryption key management

Manage encryption keys across all environments - on-premises, multi-cloud, and SaaS - from a single platform with full lifecycle management, separation of duties, and audit logging.

Tokenization and masking

Replace sensitive data values (card numbers, personal identifiers, account data) with non-sensitive tokens - enabling data to be used in development, testing, and analytics without exposing real values.

Multi-cloud key management

Centrally manage cloud-native keys for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and others through CipherTrust Cloud Key Manager (CCKM) - including BYOK and HYOK scenarios for maximum key sovereignty.

Secrets management

Automate and centralize management of application secrets, API keys, and credentials across DevOps pipelines and cloud environments - integrated with HashiCorp Vault, Kubernetes, and major CI/CD tools.

How the CipherTrust Modules Fit Together

Rather than five disconnected security tools, CipherTrust is one platform - each module below protects a different part of your infrastructure, but all of them plug into the same central console for keys, policy, and audit. The diagram shows where each module fits before you look at the six products in detail.

CipherTrust Manager

CipherTrust Manager is the central console that every other CipherTrust product plugs into - it generates, stores, rotates, and retires encryption keys across on-premises and cloud environments from one place, instead of each application or database managing its own keys separately. That fragmentation - keys scattered across dozens of systems with no consistent policy or audit trail - is exactly the problem it solves.

Available as a virtual or physical appliance, it integrates with a broad partner ecosystem of enterprise storage, database, and SaaS vendors, so it becomes the single point of control an auditor can point to when asked "who can access your encryption keys, and how do you know?"

  • Full key lifecycle management: generation, backup/restore, rotation, deactivation, deletion
  • Virtual appliances (k170v, k470v) and physical appliances (k470, k570)
  • Runs on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle, Alibaba, VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix, OpenStack
  • Foundation for every other CipherTrust module - Transparent Encryption, Tokenization, CCKM, and Secrets Management all connect to it

Best for: Organizations already running, or about to run, more than one encryption or key-management tool and needing a single, auditable point of control - typically the first CipherTrust purchase, since every other module depends on it.

CipherTrust Transparent Encryption

CipherTrust Transparent Encryption protects data at the file-system or volume level - encrypting files, folders, and databases without touching the applications that use them, so there's no code to rewrite and no performance-killing redesign. It directly addresses the scenario where an attacker or a rogue insider gets read access to a file server or database volume: without the right keys and privileges, what they find is unreadable.

Beyond encryption, it enforces privileged-user access controls - even a database administrator with full OS access doesn't automatically get to read the protected data - and logs every access attempt, which is exactly the audit trail that PCI DSS, HIPAA, and GDPR assessments ask for.

  • Encrypts files, folders, and databases with no application changes required
  • Privileged user access controls - OS-level admin rights do not imply data access
  • Zero-downtime encryption and re-keying via Live Data Transformation
  • Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, AIX, Kubernetes, and qualified for SAP HANA and Teradata
  • FIPS 140-3 Level 1 certified

Best for: Organizations that need to encrypt existing file servers, databases, or unstructured data stores without rewriting applications - a common first step for meeting PCI DSS, HIPAA, or GDPR data-at-rest requirements.

CipherTrust Data Discovery and Classification

You cannot protect data you don't know you have. Data Discovery and Classification scans structured and unstructured repositories - databases, file shares, cloud storage, big data platforms - and automatically identifies and classifies sensitive data, using pre-built templates for GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, PCI DSS, LGPD, and other frameworks.

It's usually the starting point of a data-security project rather than the end of one: once you know where sensitive data actually lives, which is frequently a surprise, the output feeds directly into where to apply Transparent Encryption or Tokenization next, rather than encrypting everything indiscriminately or guessing.

  • Scans structured and unstructured data across cloud, big data, and on-premises repositories
  • Pre-built compliance templates: GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, PCI DSS, LGPD, UK GDPR, NYDFS
  • Risk reporting that highlights compliance gaps before an audit does
  • Feeds directly into CipherTrust Transparent Encryption for automated remediation

Best for: Organizations starting a data-security or compliance project without a clear picture of where sensitive data actually lives - typically the first step before deciding what to encrypt or tokenize.

CipherTrust Tokenization

Tokenization replaces a sensitive value - a card number, a national ID, a customer record - with a non-sensitive token that has no exploitable value if it's exposed, while the real data sits protected in CipherTrust. For a PCI DSS assessment specifically, this is a direct cost lever: systems that only ever see tokens, never real card numbers, can fall outside PCI DSS scope entirely, which shrinks both the audit and its cost.

It comes in two forms - vaultless tokenization, which generates tokens on demand without a separate token database, and vaulted tokenization, which stores token-to-value mappings for cases that need that model - so the deployment matches the compliance and performance requirements rather than forcing one architecture on every use case.

  • Format-preserving tokens - a tokenized card number still looks like a card number to downstream systems
  • Vaultless and vaulted deployment models
  • Can remove systems from PCI DSS scope entirely, reducing audit cost and complexity
  • Integrates with CipherTrust Manager for centralized policy and key control

Best for: Payment processors, retailers, and any organization handling card numbers or other regulated PII who want to shrink their compliance footprint rather than encrypt and audit everything that touches that data.

CipherTrust Cloud Key Manager

Every major cloud provider offers its own native key management service - and if you use three clouds, that's three separate consoles, three separate policies, and three separate places an auditor has to check. CipherTrust Cloud Key Manager gives you one console for encryption keys across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, Salesforce, and SAP, instead of learning and maintaining each provider's own tooling.

It supports both Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) and Hold Your Own Key (HYOK) models, so organizations that need to keep ultimate control of their keys, rather than trusting a cloud provider to hold them, have a supported way to do that without giving up the operational convenience of native cloud encryption.

  • Single console for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, Salesforce, and SAP key management
  • BYOK and HYOK support for organizations that need to retain key sovereignty
  • Automated key rotation and expiration for compliance
  • FIPS 140-2 Level 3 security for key operations

Best for: Organizations running workloads across more than one cloud provider who want one consistent key-management policy and audit trail instead of stitching together each cloud's native tools.

CipherTrust Secrets Management

Every application, script, and CI/CD pipeline needs its own credentials, API keys, and certificates - and by Thales's own research, 62% of organizations don't actually know how many of these secrets they have across their company. That's secrets sprawl, and it's a common breach vector: a leaked API key in a code repository or a forgotten hardcoded credential doesn't need a sophisticated attack to be exploited.

CipherTrust Secrets Management, powered by Akeyless, automates the creation, rotation, and removal of secrets across DevOps tools and cloud workloads, and - unlike a lot of secrets tools bolted on after the fact - it's accessible directly from the same CipherTrust Manager console as your encryption keys, rather than being yet another separate system to manage and audit.

  • Automated secrets creation, rotation, and removal - reduces manual, error-prone credential handling
  • Integrates with GitHub, Kubernetes, OpenShift, and common CI/CD tooling
  • Managed from the same console as CipherTrust encryption keys, not a separate silo
  • SaaS delivery model built for hybrid and multi-cloud DevOps environments

Best for: DevOps and platform engineering teams who need to get API keys, database credentials, and certificates out of code repositories and config files and into a managed, auditable system.

Frequently Asked Questions

CipherTrust is designed to help organizations meet data protection requirements under GDPR, PCI DSS, HIPAA, eIDAS, and many other frameworks. It provides the encryption, key management, access controls, and audit logging that these frameworks require for sensitive data protection.

Yes - CipherTrust Cloud Key Manager (CCKM) provides centralized management of encryption keys across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Salesforce, and many other cloud services from a single interface - including support for BYOK, HYOK, and cloud-native key management.

CipherTrust is available as a physical appliance, virtual machine, or cloud service (CipherTrust Data Security Platform as a Service). The platform supports hybrid configurations combining on-premises and cloud instances for maximum flexibility.

You can start with a single module and add others later - most deployments start with CipherTrust Manager plus one product (commonly Transparent Encryption or Data Discovery and Classification) and expand as new requirements come up. Every module connects to the same CipherTrust Manager console, so adding one later does not mean starting over.

A Forrester Total Economic Impact study measured a 221% three-year ROI for CipherTrust with payback in under 6 months, and KuppingerCole named Thales Overall Leader in its 2025 Leadership Compass for Data Security Platforms, plus Overall, Product, Innovation, and Market Leader for Enterprise Secrets Management.
